GLACIER
DISCOVERY
Experience the mighty Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe. On this extended half-day tour we head higher up on the outlet glacier Falljökull, named for its incredible blue icefall.
For this glacier hike we depart from our meeting point at Freysnes Service station with all necessary glacier gear. After a 4×4 ride, which we carbon offset, we put on our crampons by the glacier’s edge, grab our ice axe and we begin our glacier walk with the ascent over 300 meters up towards the ice fall. Surrounded by blue ice and peaks carved by glaciers we will have our eyes peeled for crevasses, moulins, waterfalls and any other fun features that spring up in the dynamic glacial landscape.
During the hike your guide will tell you about the geography and history of the area, and explain glacial features.
This glacier hike is for those looking for an in-depth glacier experience in Iceland, perfect for those who enjoy long hikes, or just looking for a bit of an adventure.
If you signing up for your first glacier hike with us – do not worry, no previous glacier experience is required from you to join this tour!
be prepared for your glacier hike
What to bring for your glacier hike:
Hiking boots with ankle support, outdoor clothing appropriate to the weather as well as a hat, gloves (sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended if sunny)
Hiking boots can be rented on location for 1500 ISK. For your safety, our guides will assess your footwear when fitting crampons. If your shoes aren’t suitable—either for proper crampon attachment or secure movement on ice—they may suggest renting hiking boots on-site for an extra fee.
This glacier hike has a 24h cancellation policy with 100% refund. Please feel free to read more about our cancellation policy.
*Local Guide and its guides reserve the right to refuse service to anyone they deem unfit to participate in the activities they have enrolled in. Local Guide reserves the right to change the tour itinerary and chosen route of the glacier hike with safety in mind due to environmental factors and other factors outside human control. Furthermore, we don’t repay the fee if the client is late, or doesn’t show up even if the weather is very bad, in case we can offer the trip. So we recommend before joining us for the glacier hike to be staying in a hotel or guesthouse east of Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park, and west of the town of Höfn.
