- We visit the remoter ice caves higher on the glacier that are less travelled
Duration: Around 7 hours*
Departure time: 9:15
Meeting place: Local Guide HQ, Fagurhólsmýri
In autumn each year we start looking for the ice caves for the winter, the ice caves further up the glacier are possible to visit earlier than the ones we visit on our shorter 2-4 hour ice cave tour.
In the previous years we could start our ice cave day tour in early october-mid october, we do not know exactly when we can start the tour next season,
often we only know with short notice if the caves we find come into conditions for us to enter them.
We often have to hike far distances on the glacier to reach the remoter ice caves, the locations can also be hard to reach so we do not recommend this for those with walking difficulties.
As for photography we spend longer time inside the ice cave than on our other ice cave tours. As this is a private tour the guide to client ratio is very low allowing maximum time for photography.
If there are other groups inside the ice cave we have plenty of time to wait to get our perfect shot.
The cave we choose from day to day depends on time of winter, time of day, weather and other conditions at the time. We always go to the most interesting cave available at each time. We normally go into one cave per trip.
What to bring:
Hiking shoes with ankle support are essential, as we need to put on crampons. You can rent boots from us if it looks like your shoes are not suitable. Rental fee is 500 isk.
please wear warm outdoor clothing! we do not recommend to wear any cotton clothes on this journey as the weather can change.
Also you must bring lunch or some snacks with you on the tour.
About travelling in winter:
We are located 350 km (4 1/2 hour drive in summer) east of Reykjavík, via road 1. Please note that in icy and wintery conditions the travel time can be much longer. So we recommend that you stay in a hotel or guesthouse in southeast Iceland the night before the trip. The guesthouses in small group of farms called Hof are close by, only 5 km west of our headquarters in Fagurholsmyri.
Litla Hof (+354 4781670) or www.hof1.is or www.sleep.is Also www.hotelskaftafell.is and www.svinafell.com about 18 km west of us, a new 4 star hotel opened up in the summer of 2016 just “next to” our booking office, fosshótel glacier lagoon.
Local Guide HQ in Fagurhólsmýri (N1 fuel automat at the same location)
1/2 hour east of Skaftafell and 1/2 hour west Jökulsárlón in southeast Iceland.
